Lineman Hurt at FP&L

I just read the report about two lineman hurt at FP&L of Florida. I am on the safety committee of a nearby service center. THE STORY- A crane set a concrete pole in the hole after the Sterling digger had dug the hole. The crew began to backfill the hole when they decided to move the digger. The boom of the digger contacted the phase wire and the line specialist received a shock. The crew started CPR and at that time the phase blew back into the wire and the apprentice also received a shock. They where both transported to the hospital for treatment. They are both alive and doing well at this time. What I have just told you is the info passed on to other areas prior to the full accident investigation is complete. The full results of the investigations will be released later. Lets all look closely at the job, plan the job, work the plan, and go home safe.

The FP&L accident referred to in the Feb 7 posting was due to "Step potential". The lineman and apprentice were several feet from the truck and pole when initial contact was made. The ground was covered with wet muddy spoilage due to the size and depth of the hole. After performing CPR and while the Lineman was on the EMS backboard, the phase blew into the diiger boom again. The Ap. who was holding the Linemans hand for comfort began to get shocked again from the ground around him being energized. Both are well! And we think our companies are full of it when they talk about step potential and EH rated footwear!
