OK in the Winter

This was not a trouble call, but it's a true story.

Back in the 60's, our Construction Crews were not allowed to stay in
fancy places like Hotels. We stayed in Boarding Houses.
One place had a landlady who was an excellent cook, clean housekeeper and  the beds were comfortable, BUT she never stopped complaining. She fought  with the Meter Reader, The Drycleaner Delivery Man, The Milkman and  everyone else around. I don't remember her fighting with the boarders, but there was one night I got a talking to. The bathroom was at the top of the stairs and the latch of the lock didn't line up with the hole in the striker plate. The flush was about 10 feet from the door, and it had a rather embarassing habit of suddenly drifting open, and it was too far away to kick it closed again. One night while she was out, I went out to the truck for a screwdriver and file. I took the striker plate off and filed the hole out so it would latch properly and was back downstairs reading when she got home. After awhile she went up to the bathroom and closed the door. And it latched. She forgot all about what she had gone up there for and came down the stairs about two at a time. "Who fixed that lock" she demanded, and I confessed that I was guilty. She snapped "You'd no need to do that. It works alright in the Winter when the furnace is running".
